Quick description of post: Tascam US-122 driver installation instructions for those running Windows 7 (64 bit).
UPDATE: I have just acquired Windows 8 (64 bit) and can confirm that the US-122 WILL WORK using the same settings. I'd also like to thank everyone who has commented thanking me, and for all the page views I have received since posting. Enjoy!
UPDATE 2: I have noticed a few comments concerning blue screen errors on Windows 8. I also get this sometimes too but looking back I have had same/similar problems with other OS I have used, including those compatible with the 122. I have no idea what causes this (dodgy device driver seems to be a culprit) but I find that some VST plugins (perhaps related to Cubase also?) can make it unhappy and cause a blue screen.
I have had my trusty Tascam US-122 for well over six or seven years now. It has been through a lot with me: it came to University to study music with me and left a year later when I did; joined the many computers and laptops I have owned over the past few years; it has assisted in the recording of many half-hearted, unfinished tracks that still remain so; it has helped me vent frustration, anger, love, heartbreak, crushes, lust, depression, anxiety; despite my dreams of becoming a 'proper' musician or band manager becoming less and less realistic, it has been there to support my hobby and at least preserve my ideas.
However, as technology evolves, I have found it increasingly difficult to get my 122 working without hassle. But I'm not quite ready to part with him (it's a he btw) just yet. I have a warm affection, despite the newer models. He may be slightly grubby but he is sturdy - he has lived in no less than five properties with me and survived intact! Back when Cubase was Cubasis...
Unnecessary and slightly strange outpouring of affection aside, I know there are others with similar driver issues, particularly where Windows 7/64 bit OS are concerned. This is what I did to get it up and running. Hopefully this will work for you too (and save you time faffing around!).
TO INSTALL TASCAM US-122 DRIVERS ON 64 BIT WINDOWS 7
(Note: untested for other Windows 32/64 bit OS but if you're having issues, it can't hurt to try!)
1. Download Tascam US-122 drivers from their website (click here for link). Make sure to download v. 3.40 for Windows Vista and XP.
2. Find the downloaded driver file, unzip if necessary and RIGHT click the installation (.exe) file. Select 'Properties' and find the 'Compatibility' tab.
3. Select to run in compatibility mode, then select Vista (Service Pack 1). Select 'Run as Administrator' (I think - if it doesn't work first time, try unchecking this option).
4. Apply. Run (remember to make sure the 122 is unplugged) and, hopefully, you'll be up and running in no time! After installation is complete, plug it in and watch that pretty green button light up :-)
Any queries or comments? Please comment below and I'll do my best to assist!
Hi Shortbread Stacy, you are a star ! the little green light is on - and a few days away in the blue mountains will now also involve a music project - I'm leaving tmrw and it was not looking like anything was likely..

ReplyDeleteThank you! It worked! Wonderful
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing!!!! Thank you sooooo much!
ReplyDeleteno problem!
ReplyDeleteHi Stacey
ReplyDeleteCan i just confirm that this will work with the original Tascam US 122 (not the L or mark ii)? My dad refuses to upgrade to Windows 7 purely on the basis that he doesn't want to lose functionality with his beloved original US 122. Does everything work perfectly or are there any funny quirks he needs to know before upgrading to windows 7 such as rebooting the computer? I read in another forum that when shutting down the computer, the computer hangs until you unplug the Tascam device....

Many thanks for you help
Hi. First off I am really sorry it has taken me this long to reply. If you are still interested (and I hope so!) it is the original US-122 I use, not the L or Mark II version. It could very well work with those two mind you, but in my case it's the bog-standard original :) Sometimes you will get a blue screen. I have had issues with that since I started using the device, and I am thinking it could be related to some of the VSTs and other bits I install along with Cubase. I also advise to unplug the Tascam once you've finished with your DAW and don't plug it in while the PC starts up. Hope this helps!
DeleteYOU SAVED MY LIFE!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Stacey. One question - on my old computer I could access a control panel item called "Tascam US-122" where you could adjust latency and stuff. There was also a tuner! Do you know how to access that?
ReplyDeleteI get there thru SONAR
DeleteI still have that on my Control Panel -- which version of Windows are you running? PS Sorry it has taken me so long to catch up with these comments....
DeleteGENIUS. thanx so much
ReplyDeleterealy great THANX ...
ReplyDeleteHi Stacey, I just got my Tascam US-122 up and running with your guide on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit machine. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!! It works on 8.1. YAY! Thanks Stacy you are the poop!
ReplyDeleteNo problem! Happy music making :)
DeleteStacey, unfortunately after using your method I had to eventually uninstall the Tascam US-122. At random I'd get a blue screen and immediate shutdown on PC also if the device was still connected to my desktop it would not shut down what so ever. Thanks all the same. I was running it on Windows 7 Ultimate at the time.
ReplyDelete@Kieran: Just make sure you unplug the Tascam BEFORE you shut down, and you will not have that problem. I think everyone has this problem when using the US-122 beyond Tascam's driver support. But we figure out that simply unplugging the US-122, then clicking Restart or Shutdown, solves this problem.
DeleteYep I would agree with Robert. It could also be to do with the software you're using it with; I tend to have a lot of blue screens with certain VSTs on Cubase 5, which is SO frustrating (especially as I'd just recorded something on a whim and lost it two seconds later). I'm only sorry I can't do more to assist with that aspect of the Tascam -- if you are also using Cubase or you have installed some VSTs it could be one of them. Let me know, if you can.
DeleteThank you Stacey for the article. And I, too, hate to part with my trusty US-122 that I bought brand new many many years ago. But technology is forcing me to move into the 64-bit world, and until I read your article (I've looked and looked for help - no luck till now), I thought I'd finally have to cut the cord. Not anymore. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, glad I could help :) I really struggled to find help which was why I posted, I didn't think it'd be this popular but I am glad!
DeleteStacey, thank you so much for this. I thought I was not going to be able to use this interface, but thanks to your insight, this is working perfectly
ReplyDeleteHi, i have windows 7 64bit, I have read and follow the steps, but nothing. I get to the download, find the exe. install file, when I right click there is no properties to click on. So I am thinking it needs to be unzipped? How do I do that?
ReplyDeleteHi. Yes, the file must be unzipped. To do so, right click on the file you downloaded and there should be an option (something like 'Extract All'). That should unzip the file, open the unzipped file and install from the exe file. Good luck!
Deletetrying to get this thing to work w/ Vista.
ReplyDeleteIalready have an M-Audio c400 & just picked up a us-122(the original).
it works in my DAW(Mixcraft 6) but it doesn't show up in ASIO in recording preferences,it only shows up in WAVE RT(real time) & the latency can't be adjusted below 20mls.
I followed your instructions, downloaded the version 3.4f driver and attempted to install it on my windows 7 machine and received error that it was not compatiable with the version of windows. I am not able to find any newer drivers and TASCAM tech support is not helping. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm sorry it doesn't seem to be working for you. Have you tried checking 'run as administrator' in properties and running the exe? Try unchecked too. Also maybe try a different compatibility mode to the one I suggested - try as many as you can to see if one works. TASCAM aren't the best with their support and it's a shame they haven't provided a more up-to-date, stable driver. One thing I know is I'll be going elsewhere for my next interface which is a huge shame as I love having MIDI and audio in one box! Let me know how you get on. If I remember I'll try testing this on Windows 7.
DeleteThank you!!! You are incredible!!!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to add that I was able to successfully get the Tascam working in CuBase 5 on Windows 7 Professional 64bit. I followed the instructions precisely as detailed above under TO INSTALL TASCAM US-122 DRIVERS ON 64 BIT WINDOWS 7. Took me less than 5 minutes start to finish.
ReplyDeleteGreat - I use Cubase 5 too and it works a treat. As I've said before it does sometimes blue screen on me but I do think some dodgy VSTs set it off sometimes!
DeleteI agree. I've been using Cubase since 2000, and I love it. But yes, it has crashed with a blue screen many times. Version 5 seems to be more stable, but I have learned to save my work often. Just a note to everyone, the actually makers of Cubase ventured off and started their own company called Presonus, and made a Cubase-like DAW, called Studio One. I've tried it, and it is pretty good, and seems stable. What's cool is there is a free version which is very functional, supports 64bit (even on a 32bit processor), and is worth looking at if looking for an alternative to Cubase. Here is a link to the download page: http://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one/download
ReplyDeleteworked for me too out here in hawaii. Mahalo and Aloha!
ReplyDeleteHey Stacey, going to try this when I get home as trying to get into Cubase 5 again, Just wondering if you've had the issue of the VST (asio4all etc) only showing the Tascam as having two inputs when you activate it, IN and OUT. I remember years ago I did something in Cubase or the VST to show all the inputs like line in R L, Midi etc. Is this the problem you were having before you did your fix?
ReplyDeleteThanks
M
genious!
ReplyDeleteall work perfect thx !!
ReplyDeleteThank you !!! Just got my good old blue us-122 up on my "new" Win7 64 thanks to your instructions..... I am so happy :) .... peace,love... RockyG, Kansas City
ReplyDeleteHello Stacy. I have a problem with my US 122 that I hope you can help me with. I have the driver installed on my computer which is running Windows 7. It used to work for me before I needed to get an interface with more inputs, the Tascam 1800. The 1800 works fine, but I want to use my US 122 to access my sounds on Reason 7 when I'm out doing gigs. The particular keyboard doesn't have a USB port on it, which is why I want to use the US 122, but the thing is, I get no audio from it. All of the lights will work, and I even get a midi signal when I use it, but there's no audio. Do yu have any suggestions before I go and spend money on another newer interface? Your help would be GREATLY appreiciated.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
Steve
Hi Steve. Okay, so you have a keyboard that you're connecting to the US 122 and there's MIDI but no audio, is that correct? What is the make/model of keyboard and how have you connected it to the interface? Is it just this one keyboard that has no audio when connected or is it everything you connect? It's tricky diagnosing issues when you're not physically there but I promise I'll do my best :)
ReplyDeleteHi, I followed your instructions and got it to work, thank you. But, Windows 7 won't shut down when the US-122 is connected. I noticed the discussion hereabove about this problem, but I am not getting any bluescreens, it's just that Win7 stalls at 'Shutting Down' and restarts itself after a long period of time (might be a blue screen after all, but I have not seen it happen). Do you or anyone know of any workaround for not having to unplug the US-122 every time I want to shut down Windows?
ReplyDeleteHi, I have Windows 8.1 and installed my good old US-122L with the driver for us-122mkii version 2.03 which seems to be the same arquitecture. The green light is on, it sounds wonderful BUT I cannot use my external MIDI keyboard as MIDI IN (which is horrible). I tested it on diferent applications, all of them recognise that there is US-122L as MIDI input, the red light works also on midi triggering (or pedal) but... it doesn't sound! Some idea? (yes, the volume is on :-) )

Hoorah! I tried your instructions with Windows 10 and the tascam works! Thanks a bunch, you're very helpful.
ReplyDeleteThat's great it also works with Windows 10 - I'll update the post and include that information. Thank you!
DeleteHi, I have put my us122 in the clearing-out-box a few times but just could not bring myself to throw away such a beautiful and useful equipment. Now after a few years of non-use, thanks to your info I'm able to install it and use it again.
ReplyDeleteIt seems so wasteful and ungodly to throw away something in such perfect working condition when they could have simply done some kind of upgrade.
Cheers Shortbread Stacy.
Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOMG, thank you so very much!!!
ReplyDeleteWas using my US-122 with Win XP for a couple years on an old laptop, but wanted to move up to Win 7 after another hard drive finally conked out. I'd seen other explanations that didn't work out, so thanks again!!!
Yes, It works! many thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust followed instructions for Win 7/32, success.
ReplyDeletelooks good in device manager too. ty
